- Sealing materials: Get to know....
Discover the most used in the industry
Sealing materials are indispensable components in different sectors of industry, as they are responsible for preventing fluid leakage between sections of pipe and equipment. in the industry, the success of a production process, directly dependent on the correct functioning of all elements and, the sealing materials, are fundamental parts of this operation..
HOW TO CHOOSE THE MOST APPROPRIATE SEALING MATERIAL
In industrial processes it is not uncommon for leaks to occur between the pipe joints, of production lines and equipment in general. This problem has the consequence, in addition to unscheduled downtime for maintenance and delivery delays, also the serious risk of accidents at work, due to the possibility of the leak reaching people around the site. Other very relevant factors are the contamination of the environment and loss of fluids due to leakage, which are often raw material or final product.
Misfortunes like these occur due to installations that do not follow good practices, end of life of sealing materials or even by using an inappropriate product in a given application.
To mitigate problems of this aspect, some precautions must be taken when selecting the sealing material.:
• Kind of equipment: For correct material selection, information on the type of equipment where the gasket will be installed is required, because each equipment has a type of sealing material suitable for its application.;
• Fluid: Corrosions and other chemical reactions occur when there is no compatibility between the elements present in the system, therefore, indicating the fluid that will have contact with the seal is an essential factor to determine the material to be applied. For each type of fluid, whether liquid or gas, there is a specific type of fence;
• Temperature: Risks within the sealing system must always be analyzed. For this reason, Paying attention to the temperature at which the fluid is operating is essential, since the sealing material applied must withstand the working temperature, the choice should be more prudent the higher the temperature of the material;
• Pressure: Whereas the higher the fluid pressure, the greater the possibility of ejection from the joint, it is essential that, for the selection of sealing material, the fluid pressure is indicated so that then, a material with the relevant strength is indicated.
• flanged union: The correct harmony and reliability that the joint will have a long service life is also given by checking the following items:
o Flange: when it is identified that the application takes place on a fragile flange (vitrified, very thin wall, or plastic-reinforced fiberglass) Klinger must be informed of the torque limit that the element has.
o Screws/Tiegers/Prisoners and Washers: Paired with the gasket, they are the heart of the seal and are responsible for holding one flange against the other, maintaining compression in the gasket.. Regular replacement of these elements is necessary as they are subject to large mechanical stresses. Its material and grade are important in determining the torque at which the gasket will be installed..
TYPES OF SEALING MATERIALS
Gasket Material: are composite materials based on fibers, elastomers and additives, whose main function is the manufacture of gaskets applied in various industrial segments. Hydraulic cardboard gaskets are used in low to medium criticality processes, in another word, with low to medium temperature and pressures. The most commonly used soft joints in the industry are:
• C-4201: Sealing material with aramid fiber and NBR. Suitable for general applications with moderate temperatures and pressures. Oil Compatible, solvent, water, low temperature steam and other chemicals in general;
• C-4430: Fiberglass composite sealing material with NBR rubber. This material is universal in use with high performance and excellent charge retention.. Resistant to water, steam, oils, gases, saline solutions, fuels, alcohols, moderate organic and inorganic acids, hydrocarbons, lubricants and refrigerants, is suitable for use in water, steam, oils, hydrocarbons, solvents and refrigerants;
• C-4500: High performance sealing material, designed for chemical industry usage. Material with carbon fiber and NBR rubber;
• C-8200: Sealing material with fiberglass and Hypalon rubber. Great performance for use in acidic media, being an alternative for PTFE seals. Resistant to a wide variety of acidic fluids.
PTFE: About polytetrafluoretileno (PTFE) is a synthetic fluorinated polymer that has many applications.. Presented in the Virgo PTFE variables, loaded and expanded, this type of material can be used in the manufacture of gaskets for application in virtually all industrial segments.
More information regarding the most used PTFE material in the industry follows.:
• Produce: Chemically inert and produced from virgin PTFE 100% expanded virgin PTFE, this sealing material is compatible with all chemicals (except fluorine and molten alkali metals), has an excellent cost benefit for applications in aggressive products and is ideal for reducing items in stock. Exclusive for industrial use.
Graphite: The high resistance to acids, alkaline solutions and organic compounds, make of graffiti, a suitable material for manufacturing sealing materials. The material is used to manufacture laminates and joints that, due to their high purity index they are suitable for applications with temperature fluctuations and are resistant to a wide range of chemicals. Among the graphite-based sealing materials, the most used in the industry is the PSM:
• PSM graphite laminate: Sealing material composed of graphite with a high degree of purity and expanded metal plate. Material with expanded plate insertion, providing excellent sealing with high mechanical resistance at high temperatures and pressures. High quality sealing material, used in a wide range of industrial applications including steam, hot water, thermal oil, hydrocarbons.
Metal gaskets: Precision Machined Metal Rings, designed to be used with API 6B flanges, ASME B16.5 and API 6BX (depending on the joint style). This sealing material is often used in offshore applications and some models can be adapted for subsea installation.. In industry, RTJ rings are widely used.
• RTJ rings: RTJs are suitable for use in high pressure applications and can be manufactured from various materials to suit the process and flange materials.
Semi-metallic: Semi-metallic sealing materials, combine the metal strength with the soft sealing materials conformity such as PTFE, graphite and mica. This gasket type is intended for moderate to high pressure and temperature applications and is applied in all industry branches..
• Spiral-metallic: Spiral gaskets have the property of following movements on the flanges caused by the variation in temperature, pressure, flange rotation and the fully threaded stud relaxation.
Compression Packing: Manufactured from different types of yarn and with various forms of interweaving, gaskets are sealing materials used in hydraulic and pneumatic systems. Gaskets are applied to axial elements such as cylinders., pistons and shafts in general.
The most used gasket models in the industry are:
• KL-1057: PTFE gasket with incorporated graphite. Ideal for all branches of industry where the fluid is abrasive free
• KL-5777: manufactured from phenolic fiber and lubricated with PTFE, this gasket model combines high mechanical strength with high lubricant retention. It has high performance in rotary applications where flexibility is required and high performance degree. Due to its low friction coefficient, it offers significant improvements in rotating applications, minimizing any wear to the shaft or the jackets.
• KL-8000: ideal for a wide variety of media, including steam, oils, grease and several acids and alkalis, except where strong oxidizing and abrasive agents are present. Braided from expanded graphite, this product is self lubricating, chemically inert, soft and compressible.
